Evening Activities
Each Evening, the entire camp engages in a fun and entertaining activity. They range from skits in West Lodge to campfires on Vesper Hill to dances with the nearby boys camps, Camp Virginia and Camp Maxwelton.
Weekends and Special Events
The weekday schedule is complemented with numerous trips, traditions and special events throughout the summer. Each cabin takes a "cabin trip" to Douthat State Park, where the girls get to spend a day with their peers in a relaxed atmosphere romping in the waters and enjoying a picnic lunch.
Certain activities and groups offer special trips. The advanced canoeists take a day long trip down the Cowpasture River. The Camp Crafts class goes spelunking, on over nights (one for Jrs. and one for Srs.) and on a hike up Jump Mountain. The advanced tennis players take a trip to the Inn at Gristmill Square in Warm Springs for an afternoon of tennis, swimming and a picnic lunch. The Fives (a group that includes campers and staff who have been at CMS for at least five summers) take a special trip away from camp.
Saturdays and Sundays also offer a break from the normal routine. The two teams, the Greens and the Buffs, often hold athletic competitions on these days, such as a swim meet, canoe meet, volleyball, soccer or softball match. Sundays are tranquil and serene with more free time (to write letters home!). A morally based, non-religious service is held on Sunday mornings and is performed by a cabin group of older girls. The services center on a theme developed by the campers, such as friendship, memories and reflections on time spent at Mont Shenandoah.
