Swimming
The swimming classes at Camp Mont Shenandoah take place in the pristine, emerald green waters of the Cowpasture River. All classes are taught according to American Red Cross standards with each class led by an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. A lifeguard is placed in each class and a lifeguard is always on duty on the lifeguard stand whenever anyone is in the water. During free swim, four lifeguards are on duty at all times. A swim meet is held each summer between the two teams, the Greens and the Buffs.
Swimming is the one activity in which all campers participate and it is the one activity that meets daily (which is especially nice on hot days!).
Lifeguard training is available to campers who are 15 years of age.
Canoeing
Canoeing classes are available for all skill levels. The beginner learns basic safety and the fundamental strokes to maneuver the craft while the more advanced canoers learn to swamp and vault and take a trip down the Cowpasture River.
