Cowpasture Chronicle

Week 2

The energy was high around camp going into the second week of camp. After a full week of activities and a busy Saturday, Sunday offered a calming church reflection led by 1 Up campers. They shared their perspectives on friendship and encouraged us to embrace the friendships we get to enjoy at camp. That afternoon a randomly selected group of Outs campers got to attend the first ever spelunking trip, led by a local guide through caves nearby, and returned bubbling with stories about the unique experience. At night we played Bunkmate Games and tested the knowledge of bunkmate pairings in all the cabins. Congratulations to the ultimate winners from Sleepy Hollow: Janie J. and Bella B.!

On Monday, most of the camp enjoyed a full day of classes while a few lucky camp crafts members hiked Jump Mountain with a group of boys from Camp Maxwelton. This special experience offered to seniors in camp crafts is a joy every summer! The fun continued through the night with a camp-wide dance party during the Practice Dance.

Tuesday brought both the music of thunder and rain on tin roofs, and the pulsing drumbeats of Brother Mike from Rythemetrix. Returning for his second year, Brother Mike worked with cabins in small groups throughout the day to play the drums and learn about rhythm and music. That night, he performed for the entire camp, and West Lodge was filled with complex drum sequences that encaptured the campers in a contagious rhythm of clapping, dancing, and moving to the beat.

At the first Honor Meet of the year, the Buffs won the first 10 days and we celebrated the selected Honor Campers. These are a few campers from all ages who are recognized for the ways in which they uphold camp’s values and spirit in the way they interact with others and live in the camp community. In addition to Honor Campers, each counselor reviewed how their activities have been going and gave out small awards to outstanding campers in their classes. It was the perfect night to celebrate all of the fun we have had in only 10 days!
